Bryce and Morrie about just before turning off HWY 1

Well, they don’t get more beautiful then this. From Paso Robles up thru some twisting rural canyons, we started at a ‘Como’ pace and hit the first rest stop with the lead group. Finding a slightly more sensible groove, we managed some 30% descents and popped out onto HWY 1 with an expanding group that reached about 10 riders. Great for tucking in and enjoying 20-30 miles of coastal vista, up past Hurst Castle and then inland, up a 7 mile 2700 ft ascent from sea level thru a Redwood forest and down for lunch. After a brief and mutual bonk out and thoughts of jumping in the comfy confines of the SAG wagon, we were greeted with Mountain Dew and Popsicles that kicked us back into gear for the final 25 mile slight-tailwind-aided-30-mph surge for the finish. We rolled in just as the sun went down and joined some ranch hands, although declining a ride on the electro-bull, at the local BBQ Pit.

This was a beautiful ride thru rolling farmland, down to the ocean, up thru winding switchback and down tight ascents by the light of Morrie’s bike!

Morrie and Chris at El Do Park Crits

OC Velo (racing in Surf City Cyclery Kits) has been present and in the points at the last 3 El Do Crits. We are looking for some teammates as Morrie and I are outnumbered when it comes to team tactics. Generally the races start at 6:00 pm (or later depending on the daylight). Stage 6 of the 2007 Tour of California saw the peloton ride thru Ojai down to Santa Clairita. The route included several tough climbs including Balcolm Canyon. John, Mike, Dave H, Christina, Paul, Morrie and Chris previewed the ride early Saturday morning parking near the summit of the 20% climb. My guess would be that 2000 like minded folks gathered along the climb to join in cheering the pros. The OC Velo team rode close to Ojai and back capping 2 categorized climbs.

OC Velo was active at the Costa Mesa Criterium on Feb 18th. Morrie, Mark Pace and Chris Bryce were representing the grass roots racing project - ‘OC Velo presented by Surf City Cyclery’ team. Mark was riding his first Crit and completed his first race on the way to a Cat 4 upgrade. Morrie rode 2 races, both the Masters 40+ and Cat 4. Chris rode Cat 4 and outside of taking a lap for the sponsors (see below), got appropriately smoked and just managed to hold on to the main group.
